I was summoned as a stand-by juror and when I called over the weekend to see if I had to appear, of course I did. So this morning I drove to the courthouse in Skokie. It was raining and it took a little over an hour. The good news is that there were two jury trials scheduled for today. The first defendant asked for a bench trial so the jury room supervisor joked that we settled a case without even leaving our chairs. Then, just before lunch, the other defendant pleaded guilty. With no other jury trials on the docket, we were free to go! Not a bad day for jury duty, especially since I can't be called again for at least a year.
