I think I've finally discovered the cats' best hiding place. I opened the door to Andy's workroom yesterday so August could go inside. He likes to sit in there, we thought, because it's cold and there are lots of places to hide. He jumped up on the workbench and went I went in to see what he was looking at, I found Muffles up in the ceiling. It's only open to the workroom so they can't get inside the basement ceiling, but it's open around the heating duct. Guess that explains the metallic booms I occasionally hear in the middle of the day. We think they might be able to follow along the ductwork and get into the laundry room, too. It's sort of their own secret passage.
