Date Night

Andy and I finally used the free dinner and Zanies Comedy Club tickets we purchased at the nursery school's silent auction at their April gala. The dinner coupon expires on Dec. 30 so it was this weekend or none!

The dinner was at Roy's, a Hawaiian fusion restaurant, in Chicago's Old Town Neighborhood. We don't get to that neighborhood much but it's full of cute, independent shops, restaurants, hotels and apartments. Lots of people were walking around for a Sunday night. Andy's office had its holiday party there a couple of years ago. I had to snap this picture outside of Holy Name Cathedral:

Our reservation was for 6:30 p.m. and we were seated right when we arrived. The manager came over to our table, knowing we had a free meal coming, and asked us our food preferences. We were a bit embarrassed to say that, even though the restaurant is known for its fish, we're not seafood eaters. He said not to worry, they have beef, pork and chicken on the menu. He said he would talk to the chef and they would bring us food and wine pairing of their choice. That helps in that we didn't have to decide what to order.

The appetizer was an amazing way to start our meal. These beef short ribs were so tender the meat fell off the bone. I'm not a huge mushroom fan, but the little dumplings were filled with mushrooms and were delicious.

For our entree, the server brought out a plate with both beef and pork on it. The beef (bottom left) was served with mashed potatoes and the pork was served with roasted fingerling potatoes. Mmmm.

The dessert was a perfect ending. A chocolate lave cake was served with vanilla ice cream and a pineapple upsidedown cake was served with coconut ice cream. Notice the pineapple shaped sugar cookie in the ice cream. I don't like coconut, but the ice cream was pretty tasty - not overpowering.

After dinner we drove farther up the street to (try to) park near Zanie's. We saw two comedians do a warm-up to the headline for the night - Larry Reeb, or Uncle Lar as he's apparently known. He was pretty funny.
