Statue of Liberty

I just got back from a short stay in New York with mom, Cindy and a bunch of seniors from the National Bank in Staunton. Our first outing in the Big Apple (Saturday, Sept. 28) was to see the Statue of Liberty. We boarded a ferry and were able to walk about the statue. It's surprisingly large. The Japanese students on the ferry were so funny, posing for our pictures and taking pictures with the Americans on board.

We had a slight glitch getting back to the bus. We were waiting for the ferry to New York, not sure whether we needed to be on the New York ferry or New Jersey ferry. I didn't think we were in the city when we got on the ferry because we never crossed any water, but the bus driver didn't tell the group where we were. We didn't see anyone else in our group at the New York ferry, so we raced over to the New Jersey ferry and got there just as it left for its 11 a.m. departure. We caught the 11:20 a.m. ferry and were told, because some of the people in the group walk really slow, they were only waiting on the bus about 10 minutes for us.

I couldn't resist taking this picture of Cindy posing like Lady Liberty.

Here's a picture of Ellis Island, which was closed due to Hurricane Sandy that did a considerable amount of damage last fall. We were lucky to get to see the Statue of Liberty before the government shut-down that closed the National Park Service.
