Young entrepreneurs

Today was Irving School's annual Cookie Crumble and Craft Show. All year long, E and her friend A would have play dates, busy making crafts for the December craft show. They made American Girl doll blankets, pillows and sleeping bags; hot chocolate mixes and painted ornaments.

However, the hit of this year's show was their idea to give girls hair wraps. E got the idea from DisneyWorld where she had her wrapped as one of her souvenirs. That cost $2 an inch, but at the craft show, she and A wrapped hair with embroidery floss for 50 cents an inch. At one point, they had so many customers waiting, one of their classmates pitched in to help wrap hair.

The girls also made fliers offering to cut and tie no-sew fleece blankets for a price - just what E did for Aunt A earlier in the week. Customers can buy the fleece of their choice, drop if off here and the girls will make it into blankets by Christmas. They had three people who said they'd be buying fabric to drop off.

In all, the girls made $88. After giving A back her initial $8 to stock the cash box, each girl walked away with $40. Not bad for four hours' work.
