A toast to Houby Day
After Allison and I went to some yard sales yesterday we met Andy at The Fill Up Station in Berwyn for its Houby Day party. Houby (pronounced hoo-bee) is the Czech word for mushrooms and hunting them is a major activity of the Czechs and Slovaks who gather them by the basket full. Since Berwyn and Cicero are fulls of Czechs, it makes sense they host Houby Fest each fall.
Andy and I split a platter of Czech food that had a sausage and potato pancakes. Neither of us wanted the sauerkraut so we gave that to Allison.
They had a band (a concertina player and a drummer) playing polkas. Notice the garland of Czech flags.
Not sure who this guy on the right but he was giving a toast.
Later, I found his Post-it note with the Czech toast written on it. Maybe he doesn't know the language as well as he led us to believe.
Cheers to an absolutely beautiful fall day!
