Latvia Independence Day

Andy and I went to a Latvia Independence Day celebration yesterday in Chicago. Andy's law partner is Latvian and the partner's brother, Rob, who also works at the firm, was on the committee that planned the celebration. We didn't take a program when we went in because we figured it would be written in Latvian ... and it was. I did finally figured out that the program says Chicago. We didn't understand much but Rob's sister-in-law, who used to work at the law firm, sat behind us and translated throughout the event.
Rob giving a speech (mostly in Latvian).
This Latvian dance troupe was the reason we were there. They partner with our church for a donut day and think Andy has enough pull to make that happen. He did help but it was more of being an available group at the right time.
Andy even got his picture taken with the dancers, Rob and the Latvian ambassador to the U.S.
Then there was a reception at the community hall/Latvian school where the celebration was. Notice the Latvian flag on the table.
Then we went to an after-party at Rob's house. It wasn't far from the Latvian school, in a recently built subdivision in Chicago. I counted at least 50 people in the house and it wasn't crowded at all. It would be nice to have that much space.
Check out this charcuterie tray and all of those Latvian flags. It was a fun afternoon. And we had Latvian bacon rolls, piragi, that Rob's mom made. Delicious.
